Why is Fossil Wood called Petrified Wood?
"Petrified" means "turned into stone," and petrified wood is essentially wood that has been replaced by minerals over millions of years, resulting in a fossilized material with the appearance and properties of stone. This is why many fossil wood specimens feature quartz inclusions & can be different colours depending on the minerals present in the sediment.
Did you know there are petrified wood forests across Madagascar & Arizona?! there are fossilised tree trunks strewn across the landscape
